Noctua pronuba
Under the leaves in the grass. Are they trying to hibernate or are they duds for the year?
Awesome caterpillars! The behavior you have described is characteristic of moth caterpillars in the Noctuinae subfamily of the family Noctuidae. They are generally very late caterpillars, and sometimes are still seen in the middle of winter when all the snow is gone!
