Young Karuhiruhi (Pied shag)

Phalacrocorax varius

Description:

A young pied cormorant, found at Sumner beach, after a a very windy day, with high rough seas. He looked distressed and exausted, so we picked him up and took him to a wildlife clinic in Christchurch, where he was put down (although to my opinion, he had serious chances of full recovery) Anyway, days later, we spotted several dead young cormorants of his species, washed on the beach, due to the rough sea conditions.
