White-breasted Nuthatch (sign)

Sitta carolinenis

Description:

The White-breasted Nuthatch tend to select the same mates each year. The males and females have separate roosts. In late winter nuthatches begin their courtship song and display. The last images are images of those lovebirds. These take place mostly within an hour after the males leaves his roost hole in the morning. These quarter sized holes through the snow were discovered in an old Maple tree. Either to get out of their roost or to look for food. They went deep into the snow. No squirrel tracks anywhere, but the Nuthatchs were busy on the top of this same tree.
