Snow Goose

Chen caerulescens

Description:

White goose with darker primary feathers.

Habitat:

Suburban golf course

Notes:

Driving to a meeting this morning I saw this white goose grazing with a flock of Canada Geese. I've never seen a goose like this in Colorado, but believe this to be a juvenile snow goose maybe, but I'm really not sure! Would love to know what others think!

It was a cool and unique spotting for me! That was my first time seeing a snow goose, I haven't seen one since! I will have to look at some of my other pictures that I took that morning and compare the cackling geese to other pictures of Canada geese! Thanks all!

No Way, thanks Liam! I'm going to have to research this specie of goose! I have honestly never heard of them!

Btw, should state, your geese in the background are Cackling Geese (Branta hutchinsii). Formerly a subspecies of Canada Goose, now a full species. They are differentiated from Canada by their smaller size and stocky head/bill. Also a pretty nice bird. :)

Thanks Cindy! I was so surprised to see him! He was just hanging out with a flock of Canada Geese. It was a dreary day here in CO so most of my pictures came out crappy! Haven't seen him since! I'll have to research and see if they are more common in CO than I think! It would be cool to get some photos of some adults!

Nice spotting! I've never seen one out there either.

Yes, the smudgy gray on the head indicates a young bird.

Thanks Liam! Do you think I was correct regarding juvenile?
