Red-humped Caterpillar Moth

Schizura concinna

Description:

Caterpillar (up to 35mm) has bright red head and red hump over segment A3. Striping is variable but includes black, yellow and white pinstripes. Takes up a defensive posture raising the rear end when disturbed.

Habitat:

Range is Southern Canada to FL and CA. This one was observed crawling on my porch deck underneath oaks, hickories, and sweet gum in the midlands of South Carolina. Larvae feed on a wide range of woody plants, from many different families.

Hodges#8010. Per BAMONA, this is a record spotting for this species in Edgefield County, SC.
