Common Grass Yellow

Eurema hecabe tamiathis

Description:

Pieridae; Coliadinae; Eurema hecabe tamiathis Fruhstorfer, 1910. This butterfly has small, faint markings on the underside of its wings and the background colour is very pale. The upper surfaces of the wings, which I only saw when it was flying, have a slightly deeper yellow background colour and the markings are much more prominent. When it lands, it closes its wings. So I did not get a photo of the upper wing surfaces. This butterfly flutters around in an erratic manner and lands only momentarily before flying off again.

Habitat:

I spotted this Common Grass Yellow flying around under the shade of some Mahogany trees in our back yard. It seems to fly only just above the grasses and quickly dives for cover if alarmed.

Notes:

This subspecies is not mentioned in Wikipedia's article, but is well displayed in the pictures on Philippine Lepidoptera's website.
