Eastern Hercules Beetle, male

Dynastes tityus

Description:

Reported to be the heaviest beetle in North America! I found this large male beetle on his back in the parking lot at work. I have seen these beauties in photos but never in person until now! Amazing, huge beetle. Mustard yellow with dark reddish-brown splotches. Brown underside. Color is variable in this species. The males have horns, the females do not.

Habitat:

Suburban area with adjacent field, vegetation and drainage ditch. Attracted to lights at night.
