Eastern Carpenter Bee

Xylocopa virginica

Description:

A common bee here in Arkansas, whose type is distinguishable by the black dot on the middle back and the mostly black abdomen.

Habitat:

Found in mid day at the start of September. The temperature and humidity was high.

Notes:

I originally mistook them for the Common Eastern Bumblebee. A quote from the wikipedia article says as follows: "The primary difference in the appearances of a bumblebee and X. virginica is the conspicuously shining black abdomen."

Oops, wrong Eastern bee! Lol Thank you so much! I'll get this fixed with new links when I'm home from work later!

Beautiful images! I believe you have an Eastern Carpenter Bee here. The abdomen of your bee seems to lack hair (bumblebees have furry abdomens) and the size of this bee looks to be a bit large for a bumblebee (to me). Check out the link above and below to compare. :-)
