Eastern Lubber Grasshopper (Juvenile)

Romalea microptera

Description:

Crickety-looking. Small, approximately 2 - 2 l/2". Black, some with red stripes and some with yellow stripes down the center of the back to under the tail area; also stripes on back legs and face. Long antenna. Four shorter legs and two long back legs.

Habitat:

Seen twice (same visit) at Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. First spotting was on the upper rail of the boardwalk which meanders through a treed area. A short time later, the second spotting was in grasses that line the banks of a canal.

Notes:

I believe these are all the same organism and have, therefore, placed them in one spotting. If they are not (and I have broken a Project Noah rule), please let me know and I will break the spotting down to the boardwalk and grassy area.

Please, update your spotting, thanks!
This grasshopper is now called:
Romalea microptera, http://bugguide.net/node/view/2807/bgima...
Romalea guttata is an older name and should not be used anymore.
Nevertheless the ID of Gabe was correct.

Thanks for the id and reassurance, gabe.somarriba! I guess with those colors, they don't worry about hiding, huh?

Don't worry, they are all the same species! These are only the juveniles, however. The adults are also brilliantly colored
