Lagopus lagopus
Here is a group of Ptarmigans showing their plumage "turning", pictures taken in the Fall, (Sept.) they are turning white and losing their summer brown. Note the heavy feathered feet and they also have feathers in their nostrils to combat the extreme cold weather. There are 2 Ptarmigans in the fourth picture, I walked right by and did not see them but heard their unique calls.

Awesome !!
Wow! So lovely! It must be hard to spot though.
Nice
Gorgeous!
Good eye Jeannette, the males have "wattles", like many species of birds, an example that most of us are familiar with is the common rooster who's "crown and comb" is very apparent. The "wattles" on the Ptarmigan are quite inconspicuous. See the following link; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wattle_(ana...)
Amazing! What is that red dash above its eye?
Wonderful pictures! At the right time to spot the change in feathers!
