Female yellow-bellied sapsucker

Sphyrapicus varius

Description:

This is the female yellow-bellied sapsucker. She is similar to the male but has a white chin. Yellow-bellied sapsuckers have checkered backs, red forehead with tan-to-yellow breast and belly. They drill holes in trees to bleed tree sap.

Habitat:

This female yellow-bellied sapsucker was spotted in the cyprus swamp at Palmetto Island State Park in Abbeville, Louisiana
