Crab Spider

Crab Spider - Misumena vatia - 11th Aug 2012

Description:

Female pale green, white or yellow: sometimes with thin red lines on abdomen. Male very much smaller than female. Active May - July.

Habitat:

Usually found on flower heads, where it is difficult to see, laying in wait for an unsuspecting insect to alight.

Notes:

Crab spiders do look a bit like crabs. Their bodies are as wide as they are long. with outstretched legs like a crab's front claws, they even move with a scuttling, sideways gait.
