A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Rivina humilis
A small herb up to 250 cm tall found on roadside all over the city and outskirts of Rantepao in the Toraja highlands, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The tiny white flowers and ripe red fruits borne on long stalks are very attractive.
Roadside, in shade beside buildings.
I collected some seeds and brought them to Malaysia and was able to grow a few healthy plants which later flowered and fruited. The latter photos are those of planted material away from the native site.
Well now it's in Borneo too! I noticed birds (bulbuls) feeding on the berries of my potted plants!
Lots of ocean between Sulawesi and South America! It's here in New Guinea too http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/994... and everywhere in the tropics :-)
You're welcome. Like many plants in the tropics, they have come from somewhere else in the tropics, accidently or on purpose, carried by humans.
Thanks S Frazier for the ID!
How does this South American native turn up in Sulawesi?
