Witch’s hair lichen

Alectoria sarmentosa

Description:

I found these large mats of Witches hair lichen that literally formed curtains. Alectoria sarmentosa lacks a central chord that characterizes the genus Usnea.

Habitat:

Spotted on old growth fir trees next to the Cle Elum River in the eastern Cascade Mountains. Elevation 2400 ft.
