Description:

Fairly large butterfly, overall bright orange in color. Hind wing sometimes deep brown or nearly black with lilac border.

Habitat:

Mostly riparian areas, deciduous woodlands. Perches on tree trunks like this one at the edge of a pond.

Notes:

This is a very uncommon butterfly this far west in Colorado, but this specimen lingered at Sinton Pond Open Space in Colorado Springs from at least June 8 to at least July 20.
