Woodlouse Spider

Dysdera crocata,

Description:

about 3/4 inch long with tan body and red head

Habitat:

The Woodlouse Spider is one of the few introduced species that arrived in BC with its own prey. The spider feeds on woodlice, which were also introduced from Europe, and has long, visible fangs that pierce the shell of its crustacean prey. Not surprisingly, Woodlouse Spiders are found wherever woodlice live: in woodpiles and gardens, in dark corners of the house or in the forest. During the day, they hide under stones or in woodpiles in a silken retreat, preferring sheltered, damp habitats. At night, they search for woodlice and often other invertebrates, actively hunting this prey rather than trapping it in a web. (http://alienspecies.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/... )

Notes:

i found it to not be very aggressive
