Australasian Darter

Anhinga novaehollandiae

Description:

A water bird with a long snaking neck and brown throat. A streak of white seen running down side of neck from just below the eye. The bird had a sharp yellow beak. Pic #5 shows the bird resting on a tangled mass of dead eucalytpus tree branches at the far end of the lake.

Habitat:

Reserve for birdlife

Notes:

I acknowledge that these are not the best photos - there are fantastic pictures of this bird captured by others on Project Noah. I wish to document this nevertheless. There were two of them on the lake;neither spent more than a few seconds with their head outside the water. It was great to see them enjoying the sunshine. they then settled on the far-side of the lake to dry-off. Also known as 'snake bird".
