Today is World Elephant Day. Sadly both African elephants and their Asian cousins are declining throughout their range, as their habitat is reduced by deforestation and poaching to support the illegal ivory trade continues. There are now fewer than 400,000 African elephants and 43,000 Asian elephants worldwide, and one out of every three Asian elephants left in the world is a captive animal.
