Gonipterus scutellatus
A larva of a eucalyptus weevil. The thread is frass (excreta) that is retained by some beetle larvae for protection against predators.
The second (black) structure was thought to be a pupa but is not and may possibly be a predated larva? The champion weevil larva photo goes to Argy Bee, see here http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/805...

Thanks Argy Bee. I believe you are correct and this is not a pupa at all.
Thank you Leuba. I have checked some other species and I think your species suggestion is the only one with these larvae.
Actually the pupa should be in soil.
Martin, these are larvae of the Eucalyptus Weevil - Gonipterus scutellatus

It's wonderful that you've got what looks like a pupa as well !
Mark, I'm assuming the black structures are pupae, what do you think. I have collected two and will wait for their emergence.
Another good find. I haven't seen any since then either. Hope we find out the adult someday.
