Although there are differences between Filipino subspecies and species in other countries, there is an important difference that defines this butterfly as Dark-brand bushbrown. Mycalesis mineus posterior 4 ocelli, not 3 as in Mycalesis perseus, are in a straight line.

Mycalesis mineus, the underside of the forewing has only two eye spots, the underside of the hind wing has three large aligned eye spots.
Mycalesis perseus, underside of the forewing has more than two eyes, the hindwing with a large eye point in the middle is indented.
