Barred Owls prefer large heavily wooded forests, often near water. Squirrels, chipmunks, voles, birds, and amphibians are a sample of their diet. This photo was taken at the Leslie Science and Nature Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They have takin in several raptors that each have suffered a permanent injury that makes them unable to survive in the wild, where even a seemingly small injury spells the difference between predatory dominance and certain death.
She was pulled from the nest by a predator in 2004, breaking her facial bones. This now causes her beak to grow in crooked.
