Fox Squirrel

Sciurus niger

Description:

What I believe to be a male, Fox Squirrel

Habitat:

At one of our platform feeders attached to a tree in our front yard. The tree is located near a (frozen) lake and within a seven mile radius of wetlands, farmlands and woodlands.

Notes:

I've noticed that (during the spring) squirrels make a sound that sounds similar to a cat's purring so I've started making this sound to our squirrels when they act afraid of me (warning cries and tail shakes). It seems to work great on all but the red Squirrels and tends to calm them down a bit and allow me to get closer to them. Fox Squirrels are the rarest up here followed by Red Squirrels with the Black (morphs) and Gray being the highest in number. I've yet to see an all white (morph or albino) up here but am hoping...
