Common Bird's-foot-trefoil

Lotus corniculatus

Description:

A small perennial herbaceous plant belonging to pea family (Fabaceae). Plants seen here were all some 10 to 12 cm tall on maximum. Flowering stem is erect, and taller than the rest of plant. It produces. It produces bunches of yellow flowers in groups - flowers, brightly yellow have red veins, and are all red-yellow before opening (see photos).

Habitat:

Alpine pastures on pre-Alps.

Notes:

There is apparently a slight confusion around the name, since the similar name 'Bird's-foot-trefoil' can be used for some representatives of the same genus as well. The plant has great value in agriculture, as forage plant for ruminants as well as the nectar producing plant. There are records that the plant was used, as an infusion, as sedative.
