Camouflaged Tetrigid Grasshopper

Description:

Tiny Grasshopper of about 5 mm of the family Tetrigidae, camouflaged with the rock and gravel along the river.

Habitat:

On the rocks and sandy areas close to the river, Tropical forest, dry season, Chorreadero Park, 10 km above Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, Mexico.

Notes:

Son inconfundibles, pequeños, con el pronoto prolongado hacia atrás, y las alas anteriores vestigiales, siendo las posteriores funcionales. This family of grasshoppers in almost always small (less than an inch) and characteristically have the pronotum prolonged back over the abdomen and tapered at the end. The front wings are vestigial, but they can fly with the hind wings. They are often camouflaged to match their environment.
