Sea cucumber

Description:

Black sea cucumber, with dusting of sand on part of its ventral surface

Habitat:

Nearshore shallow water tropical coral reef ecosystem

Notes:

Spotted at low tide (in about 4 inches/10 cm of water) on the reef flat south of Mokauea Island. Specimen was about 1 foot/0.3m long. Image note: view is through-water; unusual prismatic effects were caused by sunlight refracting as it entered a denser medium, the sea water, via wind-generated ripples on its surface.
