Description:

Named for the bright red hind wings, visible only when the insect is in flight. This is a late summer and fall species.

Habitat:

Open field with very short grasses, sparse yucca, cacti, and scattered elm trees.

Notes:

Makes a loud crackling noise in flight. This is a wary insect that is difficult to approach closely.
