Pearl crescent

Phyciodes tharos

Description:

It is a medium to small sized butterfly that has orange and black markings on its wings. It has amazing colors and was found after a storm In the morning. It is a amazing butterfly that has striped Antennae with black and white. The butterfly's underside has brown that is probably to scare of predators, this probably dosen't work during the day because It basks in the suns light and opens it's wings showing Its bright orange colors. It was flying low to the ground and was in pristine condition.I am thinking that it just hatched from a chrysalis at night and it's wings are still very fragile. It is one of the first butterflies to come after winter in the spring and is one of my favorite butterflies in the area.

Habitat:

Fields and grasslands and sunny places where the butterflies can bask their wings. It also seems to like urban areas that people plant flowers like zinnia and others. It likes dandelion flowers and other weeds that can be found In Texas.

Notes:

Newly hatched butterfly found on grass. It seems to be a male because It is a little smaller than the females that I see flying around. The females also have a more dull orange to me with a swollen abdomen.
