Australian Jewel Spider - female

Austracantha minax

Description:

This beautiful spiky female orb weaver was only one amongst 6 or 7 in circular webs with complex supporting strands. Legs were orange, the body mostly black with white and bright yellow patterns. Pic 1 shows the posterior aspect of the abdomen and Pic 2 shows the small black head and fangs. Pics 3 & 4 are of the underside. Body about 8 mm long.

Habitat:

Spotted amongst low shrubs in a national park

Notes:

Must get a shot of male spiders.
Family: Araneidae
