Giant Wasp

Description:

A very large wasp like creature, between 2” and 2.5” in length. All black, with a large white spot on each forewing. The wing tips have a pale blue sheen when they catch the light.

Habitat:

Adjacent to a small stream. Altitude 1000m.

Notes:

This is easily the largest wasp I have ever seen and I have seen some monsters. I last saw it a year ago, when I missed the photo from trying to get too close. These rather substandard images were shot from 30 feet, to the other side of a stream, in heavy undergrowth and tree cover blocking the sun.

Still, I am hoping someone out there might recognize this beast and give me an identification. In the meantime, I will be striving for a better shot for you. This must be a rare bug, because how can something be this big and not pop out on a search.
