Great Orange Huntsman Wasp

Cryptocheilus fabricolor

Description:

An attractive large wasp with bright yellow wings, legs and abdomen in stark contrast with a shiny black thorax. Eyes were a deep red.

Habitat:

Spotted in a national park near its burrow in the ground.

Notes:

This wasp was flying frantically around my legs. I stood still and studied the ground around and found a "comatose" huntsman spider nearby and a hole in the ground partially covered by dry grass. I did not move but watched the wasp carry the spider to it's hole....next spotting.
Family: Pompilidae
This wasp appeared slightly smaller than C.bicolor
