Western Scrub-Jay

Aphelocoma californica

Description:

The western scrub-jay's a curious bird common to this area. Their coloration ranges from mostly blue with gray or gray with blue with a pale underside. A white upper eye mark is also usually present. This individual was picking up food stuff, maybe seeds, near where I was camping. After picking up what he had found on the ground he would fly into a near by tree to consume it. These jays are common to the area, but they are always a joy to see. I have always had a soft spot for jays and crows.

Habitat:

Ponderosa pine and gambel's oak forest laced with intermittent streams and rivers as well as very large grassy mountain sides.

Now that is a lovely bird. I can understand why you have a soft spot for them.
