Mute Swan

Description:

Mute Swan: I went to a park, while I was visiting Pennsylvania, and I saw a white Mute Swan, swimming in a small lake. Mute Swans, are very large waterfowl. They have heavy bodies, short legs, and a long slender neck, habitually held in a graceful S. The large flat bill, has a bulging knob, at the base. Mute Swans are entirely white, with a bill that is orange, with a black base. Young swans ( cygnets ), may be dusky-gray all over, with a gray-black bill. They feed by grazing on underwater vegetation in shallow water, tipping up there bodies if necessary. It also feeds on young cereal crops, split grain, and on artificial food sources such as bread, given by the public. The Mute Swan, is one of the heaviest flying birds, in the world. Adults can weigh over 15 kilograms. Males are called ( cobs ), and females are called ( pens ). Size: Wingspan: 200 to 240 cm. Length: 140 to 160 cm. Habitat:

They're numerous and familiar in city parks and in bays, and lakes in the Pacific Northwest, Great Lakes, Northeast, and Midatlantic. Look for Mute Swans, in city-park ponds, as well as rivers, lakes, and estuaries. The Mute Swan, is found in a wide range of water bodies, including rivers, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, flood waters, tidal estuaries, and sheltered coasts.
