Clematis virginiana
Flora in bloom: four, white petals with a yellow center. If I remember correctly, their leafs have a rough texture to them as well.
Areas in and around deeper woodlands, within a city block or less of fresh water (in this case, Lake Emma)
Closer to the woods than the lake, I haven't noticed a strong fragrance coming off these blooms but occasionally have seen moths on or near them (their pollinators, perhaps?).
Mick G-Thank you so much (again)!! You know, I haven't notice a strong fragrance but there are so many other wildflowers blooming around this same time, perhaps I mistook their fragrance as having come from another flower...Will have to put my nose to them this year and check. "-)
Should be very fragrant. One of my favorite native vines. A cultivated variety is Clematis paniculata which is available at many garden stores.
