Mystery Snails

Viviparidae

Description:

These rather large snails are unusual in that they give birth to living, shelled young. Most other freshwater snails lay eggs. The larges species in North America, the Chinese Mystery Snail was brought to the United STates in the 19th century as an aquarium cleaner (it eats algae) and has become well established in the Northeast.
