A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Calliandra eriophylla
Fairy dusters' leaves close slightly at night, helping the shrubs conserve moisture. In summer, after the flowering period, 3-inch-long seedpods develop. As they dry, the pods split open, dispersing seeds. Pink fairy duster grows 1 to 5 feet tall and wide, and Baja fairy duster grows 2 to 6 feet tall and wide. These semi-deciduous shrubs shed some foliage in summer. In periods of extreme drought, however, they shed all their leaves. Fairy duster shrubs defoliate during winter in the cold areas within their hardiness zones.
