Mourning Cloak (Larvae)

Nymphalis antiopa

Description:

Mourning cloak caterpillars displaying gregarious behavior and rapidly defoliating the host plant. Initially spotted in a small webbed nest as first instars. They appear to be late instars now.

Habitat:

I cannot determine if this is a bigtooth aspen or an eastern cottonwood. Can anyone help?

Thank you!

The tree is driving me a bit crazy. I will have to get more photographs of it. It could be cottonwood, aspen, poplar, or who knows what else.

I can't help identify the tree but it's a nice spotting!
