Surf scoter (male)

Melanitta perspicillata


Males are black with distinctive white patches on their head and a colorful bill. Females are smaller and brown (pic 3).These are diving sea ducks that eat mussels and invertebrates for much of their diet.


Spotted at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.
