Froghopper

Philaenus sp

Description:

Small jumping insect, less than 1 cm long; moves quickly.

Habitat:

Deciduous forest bordering the river Rhone - in a natural protected reserve.

Notes:

Insect repsonsible for so called "cuckoo-spit" in gardens - a mass of watery bubbles produced by the insect while it feeds on plant's sap. The spit serves two purposes - to protect the hopper by hiding it underneath, and to keep it moist.
