Debris Carrying Lacewing Larva

Chrysopidae

Description:

Looks like a pile of debris with legs.

Habitat:

Found in our yard on the leaf of an iris.

Notes:

Possibly the same species as the Lichen -carrying Green Lacewing adult I just posted. These larvae have sickle shaped mandibles that inject their prey, often aphids, with digestive fluid and consume the liquidized contents. The exoskeletons of their prey and lichens are often used in the debris package they use for camouflage. The debris package is attached to setae on their backs with threads.
