Masked lapwing

Vanellus miles

Description:

A medium sized bird with distinctive yellow wattles off the face.

Habitat:

Open grassy parkland.

Notes:

These birds have an incredibly strong parenting ethic. They will vigorouslly and loudly chase off much larger creatures within their brooding territory even to the point of physical risk to themselves. http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf/Web...

Thanks Alice. I've got a soft spot for them too Scott. They're one of the few birds that calls at night in flight.

I used to live by an airstrip in southern Papua. These guys were always on that grassy airfield foraging. I miss seeing them.
