Short-Beaked Echidna

Tachyglossus aculeatus

Description:

Found this little guy curled up at the side of the road - maybe got hit by a car and was stunned. After a few moments, he seemed to recover and scurried off.

Great photo. I've had to move a few of them to a safer spot. Two heavy towels and leather gloves were not enough to keep from getting stuck by their quills. Very primitive animals.

Welcome to the community Jocelyn - and congratulations, this fascinating egg-laying mammal has been chosen as spotting of the day!

The short-beaked echidna is covered in spines, has a distinctive snout, a long sticky tongue to lick up its prey, and is one of only 5 species of egg-laying mammals!
