D'Orbigny's Slider Turtle

Trachemys dorbigni

Description:

This species is one of the biggest victims of the illegal trade in animals. Is sold with the promise that it will keep that color for life and never reach large. Seeing newborn puppy with about 3cm, most believe. However, growing 3-5cm per year and losing the intensity of its colors as it approaches maturity, while females can reach up to 30cm and males up to 25cm, it becomes uncomfortable and the copies are abandoned or in lakes in the hands of entities across the country, causing a new imbalance due to the complexity of the work of the nature reintroduction of captive-bred animals.

Habitat:

Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), Uruguay and northeastern Argentina. Swamps, marshes, lakes, streams and rivers.

Notes:

These D'Orbigny's Slider Turtles are from nursery of the zoo in my city, "Ilha de São Pedro" ("St. Peter Island")
