Sand Wasp

Bicyrtes quadrifasciatus

Description:

Long bodied, larger wasp. Black with pale bands on the abdomen. Yellow legs.

Habitat:

Suburban backyard garden, visiting the Oregano blooms.

Notes:

I only saw this beauty once and it didn't stay long for more photos.

I believe you are probably right. The closest I could get was Genus Bembix. Suspicions leaning to species B. americana . But the only sticker for me was that the white stripes on yours don't meet on the top of the abdomen, and all the pics in BugGuide.net for that species either do meet or at least touch. Don't know if that's a problem or not. But you found a cool wasp. Love wasps!
