Calopteryx splendens
I am NOT an expert, specially dragonflies are not really easy to ID, as you pointed out, you often need to see the details. Taking pictures of dragonflies is also not really easy. The cameras of the phones are getting better and better, but for macro and there are still limits. But the phone you usually aleways have with you, so, better than nothing. There are some optional lenses for the iPhone and others, but I have no experiences with that one and you need to carry them with you all the time. I just bought a new Lumix compact for city trips and easy-to-carry-around shots and my Canon D40 for extended trips. But I usually are to lazy to carry it with me and fighting with some technical problems.
My best advice: Never give up!! ;-)
Mmm.. next time I see a dragonfly I ll make sure I take the right pictures.. it s only once I started trying to use the keys I realised I hadn t necessarily taken the important areas of the insects.. I ll do better next time.. Here the dark area doesn t seem to start too close to the nodus but it does go further back.. so I ll stay with your choice as I don t have your expertise :o)
What do you use to take your pictures? I usually use my phone but am disappointed with the results.
The extension of the darker areas in male of Splendens is much smaller than the correspodning area in Virgo. I also mean the Splendens have some tiny stronger marked green rings on the body, whereas Virgo is more greenish/bluish. What do you think??
