Red-vented bulbul

Pycnonotus cafer

Description:

Slate-gray bird with darker, almost black, head and tail ~ 20 cm long.

Habitat:

Suburban area on a mesic, tropical, insular lowland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted perched in my wiliwili (Erythrina sandwicensis) tree. That tree is summer deciduous and has just begun to leaf. I went outside to document its early leafing appearance and noticed the bird. It was quite cheeky and did not take flight as I approached, so it naturally ended up in the picture I took. I cropped that picture to get what is posted here. Unfortunately, the red vent is not visible. This species is invasive in Hawaii.
