Eastern Tent Caterpillar

Malacosoma americanum

Habitat:

Most of their webs are on black cherry trees. Prunus serotina.

Notes:

These caterpillars are exceptionally abundant this year. Once they started dropping out of their webs they are everywhere all over everything. While in their webs they come out three times per day to feed. Cherry leaves contain cyanide compounds which the caterpillars can regurgitate when disturbed. Some of the cherry trees here are denuded now.
