Sclerolaena birchii
Sclerolaena birchii, commonly known as galvanized burr, is an Australian native species that belongs to the family Chenopodiaceae. It's a short lived dense woody and woolly shrub, 1m tall and wide with spiny fruit. It's also a pioneer species and germinates on mass after rainfall events. PS: Many thanks to the good people at the Queensland Plant Identification group on Facebook, for their assistance to ID this spotting.
Galvanised Burr grows in sandy soils in subtropical, warm-temperate and semi arid areas of eastern Australia within the 300–500 mm rain belt. Spotted along a sandy track at the Lake Broadwater Conservation Park.... https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/lake-... This is a very flat area in a region known as the Darling Downs. Dalby is the nearest town. NB: Just a little over 12 months ago and this lake was completely dry due to the massive drought that Australia experienced. It's wonderful to see how the lake and surrounding bushland has recovered. Birdlife was abundant, and vegetation was green and lush.
Declared a noxious weed in parts of Queensland, NSW, and SA.... https://grasslands.ecolinc.vic.edu.au/fi...

Not a species I was aware of before now. An interesting, albeit anti-social, plant.
This brings back memories of my younger life 'hunting-ground'.
