Cossid Moth Pupal Casing

Family: Cossidae

Description:

A dark brown pupal casing about 13mm wide of a large moth larva, partially protruding from a hole in an acacia tree. The bark covering the hole had been pushed aside but still attached to the tree.

Habitat:

Acacia tree ( Pic # 5)- nature reserve

Notes:

This is a pupal casing of a larva of a Cossid Moth. The larva lives in the wood, eating and developing within, for about three years. After eclosion, it lives as an adult for a few weeks, not eating but mating and laying eggs. The larvae of some have a strong odour and therefore these are called Goat Moths.

Thanks Luis. It was strange but fascinating -sticking out of the trunk. The trunk had several fairly big holes. I hope I can find an ID for this particular one.
