Early Saxifrage

Saxifraga virginiensis

Description:

The genus name meaning "rock-breaker" arose from the belief it was useful in treating kidney stones, based on the doctrine of signatures. Having nothing to do with many of the genus growing on rock outcroppings, since the first species described was a meadow plant. There is no evidence of any of the species being efficacious in treating stones. Though the leaves of many are edible and high in vitamin C, if somewhat tasteless.

Habitat:

Mixed woods
