Giant Red Turks Cap, Mexican Turks Cap, Sleepy Mallow, Sleepy Hibiscus

Malvaviscus penduliflorus, M. arboreus var penduliflorus, M. arboreus var mexicanus, M conzatti, M. grandiflorus

Description:

2-3" pendant, sleepy scarlet blooms. My plants bloom in late fall. Glossy medium green tropical foliage on a vigorous tropical shrub or woody perennial. An unusually large blooming variety.

Habitat:

Wildlife habitat yard on Belton Lake.

Notes:

My plants bloom in very late fall. The plants I had in the ground just north of Dallas in zone 7b put on buds so late in the season that they usually froze before actually blooming. The plants froze back to the ground every year, but did return in the spring. After a number of years I dug them up and potted two. They bloom inside the house all winter. This is the first year for this plant in the ground at Belton. Fortunately this fall has been mild enough for it to bloom outside.
